Unabridged audio books can often be exorbitantly expensive, often more than 10 times the price of the same book in it’s printed form. There is of course another option, that of buying used audio books from various sources.

Buying Used Audio Books

By definition, used audio books are audio books that have been used by at least one other person. The original user may have returned the used audio book to the store or website from which it was purchased or may sell the used audio book themselves, e.g. on EBay. If the used audio book has been returned to the store from which it was purchased then the store will resell it at a drastically reduced price as a used audio book or a returned audio book.

There are a number of reasons why someone might want to return an audio book. The original purchaser may have started listening to the audio book and found that it was not to their liking or didn’t match the description. In some cases people purchase an audio book, listen to it and then return it for a refund so that they can effectively enjoy free audio books!

There are a number of obvious benefits to purchasing used audio books. Firstly, unlike music cds, used audio books will usually only have been played once or twice and so are usually in almost new condition, scratched cds are less of a concern when purchasing used audio books. You will usually be able to buy used audio books in a condition that is nearly identical to a new audio book costing more than twice as much.

Prices of used audio books vary greatly but you will often be able to buy popular used audio books for less than half the original price. This is especially true if the store selling it is having a clearance sale on various items, including audio books that have been returned.

There can, however, be some downsides to purchasing used audio books. Some audio books are returned because they are defective, in some cases these items get sold mistakenly as working used audio books. This doesn’t happen often and when it does the store will usually give you a refund, just be sure to check the stores refund and return policy on used audio books before you buy.

Both online and offline there are many places that sell used audio books. Many high street book stores and cd stores sell audio books and will often have a small selection of used audio books. However, you will find a much wider selection and far more competitive prices when you buy used audio books online.
